The entire southern Vancouver Island disc golf community is lamenting a brash decision by UVIC to remove the baskets from the (previously known as) UVIC Disc Golf Course. Now I guess dog walkers rule the day and us disc golfers get to travel at least 90 minutes to get to a course. The only courses are Pender, Saltspring, Nanaimo. That is it.
Both the CRD and UVIC has ignored this topic and hasn't allowed new course development to occur. UVIC has not maintained their course, and have said that they don't want it to be there, and it shouldn't be maintained at all.
HEY PEOPLE... Disc Golf is in the Seniors Games. It's a recognized sport. For the entire south island to be without a course is intolerable. The powers that be need to realize that Disc Golf is a game that alot of different people, from all walks of life, play. It's not just something we like to do every now and then, it's not just like "oh, let's play a round of mini golf once a yaear", it's something many of us do every day! Yes, EVERY DAY!
How can we be able to play a round of disc golf when there are no baskets unless you want to drive over the Malahat to Nanaimo and spend 30$ on gas, or drive to Sidney and spend 15$ on gas and 25$ on the ferry to either Saltspring or Pender?
How can seniors train for the Seniors Games in Prince George (which by the way spent money on improving their disc golf course)? We can't possibly be asking seniors of all people to drive to Nanaimo in order to train.... or are we?
So, that is my rant. I am moving to Nanaimo tomorrow, have a nice character home overlooking Bowen Park, and will be able to play my quiet sport every day. I am fed up with the south island and it's lack of influence or promotion of this sport and we all are just waiting, waiting, and nothing happens.
